We are using pfsense for FW anf Openvpn server. Most of the clients laptops are Windows XP. The openvpn client with Openvpn GUI work well when it runs on accounts with local admin rights, but if a regular account is used the routes to the LAN subnets are not applied preventing any communication.

Well, the route addition failure hints at "not running with enough privileges", but there's a few --ip-win32 settings that migh thelp - if CreateIpForwardEntry?() doesn't work, maybe "-ip-win32 netsh" works better.
Click on the OpenVPN GUI shortcut with right mouse button and choose "Settings". A window with shortcut settings will open, then open tab "Compatibility" and check the checkbox on "Run this application with administrator rights" .
